HISTORY

The Teach Academy is built on the site of a former Kilgore tobacco plantation in the outskirts of Bath North Carolina. The Kilgore Estate was built in 1679 by Ernst Kilgore a Dutch settler. The estate entered the Ormond family after the death of Edward Teach in 1718. It was run as a working as a plantation for 140 years, it was unique in the area for it use of freemen, black, white and native American, instead of slaves. It was mistaken burned down during the civil war by Sherman as the Union Army moved south. It was rebuilt in 1875 to accomodate the family business which was importing and exporting, offices and vaults were installed during that time. In the earliy twentieth century the estate languished, as the Ormonds moved out of state. It eventuallu fell into disrepair and was abandoned. The site became overgrown, and was reclaimed by the forests and swamps surrounding it.

In 1999, Ted Ormond, moved back to North Carolina and began restoring the estate. He had the central hilly area cleared of brush, and begain restoring the estate itself. He built a garage, and workshop in period style off from the main building, as well as a gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. The area was wired with hispeed fibre-optic cable (which he offered to the public buildings of Bath as well).

In 2003, the main buildings were restored to superfical appearance of their 19th century period decor, but an underlying high-tech and carefully engineered with the latest telecommunications, HVAC, and back-up energy systems. He had private roads paved, and the water access dredged. He opened the Academy in June 2004.
