Orcish clan rule involves a complicated balance between pure blood and breadth of families. That is to say that a clan's strength derives from the importance and honor of certain family lines. These are matrilinear though the authority of any particular clan depends on the importance of a particular family line within it. But a clan which was pure, that is consisted only of blood from one line would have relatively less politcial power, since the connections and relations of power require extensive family connections. It is the job of the families matriarchs to determine which marriages will be advantageous to the clan. Most clans are led by the most important of the members of the largest family line related to the clan. Of course some lines have clan lord positions in multiple clans, this extends their power even more than normal. The Zura line for instance is one of the most powerful of the family lines. Families can increase in power by means of marriages, honor, wealth and political power of their members.
Originally the independent clans were nomad bands meeting for battles and trade in the Pellorian Steppes and the area of the Sister's of Fire. After the crusades, the orcish bands moved into central Fey Por and settled there, becoming farmers, laborers and craftsmen. Two things happened with this change. The urbanization of the orcs made two clan pre-eminent: the Darkeyed Clan and the Iron Chain Clan. These were the two clans which settled in Bachti and Mersey. The second was the involvement of the Orcs in the Fey Porian nationalist movement during the Undeclared War. The Clans invoked a special category of war in which they set aside clan differences and made a single leader, a warlord, for the duration of the war. This was Clandish Paekinor. He led the orcish armies in numerous campaigns throughout the war, carving out a territory for the orcs and their human followers. During the siege of Missledown conflict grew in the clans and Clanlord Oroc split dubbing himself Clandish. Although both sides honored the agreement and continued to fight the Uruhrians, the clans themselves split. Oroc was only able to lure one other clan away from the orcish war-state. After the war Paekinor was able to keep the confederation of clans together into a tightly knit nation. For the last five years there has been relative peace among the clans under Paekinor and Oroc but there is some dissent. Some clan-lords voice quiet disapproval of the Clandishes illegitimate holding of power past the war. Others are happy to see the orcs emerging as a true power, and see their best chances of success asa unified nation. Technically the various clan lords can meet to revoke the title of Clandish from existence, but just recently they reaffirmed its importance.
In the meantime, both Paekinor and Oroc have consolidated their control over their newly acquired lands and began to act more like the human lords they replaced. They've given out titles, lands and offices like any other lord.
